Show ceaseless efforts to pull the Hospital out of the hole deserve great praise and appreciation. Hearty thanks are due also to the several Counties who contributed again this year to the upkeep of the Hospital. Due to the renewed efforts of General Chao, larger contributions have come in this year than last, in spite of their own struggle with drought, flood, and famine- And to our many American friends, we express our very grateful thanks for their increased efforts to help us pay off our debt. In this connection we wish to mention particularly the very generous gift received on Christmas Day from several Hawaii friends, and also the four or five different sums amounting to a considerable total sent us thru the year by the Gustavus Church of Farmdale, Ohio. We understand that the Church is a small one in a farming district, but in spite of farmers' hard times, they have given exceedingly liberally that the message of Love may be given freely here. The winter of 1935-36 witnessed the worst famine in our district since that of 1919-20, and the scarcity of food lasted until the end of May when the winter wheat was harvested. (We are happy to report that there is plenty of food this winter-tho the prices are high.) During the first part of the year, local patients were few but we cared for the refugees sent up from Southern Shantung where the Yellow River had broken its dykes.
