Show PREFACE This is a work which describes the processes by which the Uintah-Ouray Indian Reservation was created and which forced the Ute Indians into permanent residency there. It is a study in Indian-White relations. The sources for this work are mainly those traditionally used by historians. The advice of certain Ute gentlemen was helpful, especially the advice from Reginald 0. Curry and Henry E. Harris, Jr.. Special thanks is due to Dr. S. Lyman Tyler, who served as chairman of my committee, and who gave innumerable suggestions for improvement. I also wish to thank the members of the committee who read the work, Dr. David E. Miller, Dr. Alan F. Coombs, Dr. Roger M. Haigh, and Dr. Philip C. Sturges. Thanks are also extended to Mrs. Trudy Elsmore and Miss Pamela Blaisdell who typed the manuscript and to John Sylvester who proofread and edited this work. My gratitude is due to Gregory C. Thompson for his research suggestions and for the beneficial effects of the continuing dialogue that he helped generate. My gratitude is extended to the American West Center and the Duke Oral Indian History Project at the University of Utah for support in research and to Dr. C. Gregory Crampton who selected me to work in that project. The Department of |
