Air Force officials have announced the scheduled launchings of two Athena missiles on Thursday evening, May 6, from White Sands Missile Range's launch complex near Green River. The multi-stage research vehicles will be programmed to impact on the national range ,at White Sands Array persona el will monitor the firings and provide -safety and data gathering support. Data collected will be used for re-entry studies performed by Army, Air Force and ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) activities. At that time Army officials said the safety area west of U. S. Highway 1 GO-163 between LaSal June, tion and Mnoticello will be evacuated for the missions. Evacuation will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday for a period up to 12 hours. (Intermittent roadblocks will be set on access roads leading into the same area 'beginning at 9:15 p.m. White Sands officials emphasized that U. S. Highway 160-163 in Utah and U.S. 70 in New Mexico will not be closed to traffic. A4 ^ The Times-Independent Moab, Utah 84532___ Thursday, May 13 1971 Athena Set For Friday Air Force officials at 'White Sands Missile Range1, N.M., announced the scheduled launch of an Athena mis-sile Friday evening (May 14) from White Sands Missile Range's launch complex near Green River, Utaif. The launch was originally scheduled for May 6, however, technical difficulties with the missile required postponement. The multi-stage research vehicle will be programmed to impact on the national missile range in south-central New Mexico. White Sands personnel will monitor the firing and provide safety and data gathering support. The firing mission is •scheduled for completion by midnight Friday. At the same tame Army officials said this mission woaiM require evaluation of the safety area west of U. S. Highway 160-163 between La Sal Junction and Monticello, Utah, beginning at 12 noon Friday, -Intermittent roadblocks will be set on access roads leading into the same area beginning at 8:30 p.m. U.S. Highway 160-163 will not be closed to traffic. U. S. Highway 70, between Las Graces and Al-amogordo, N. M., will be 'blocked intermittently for the mission beginning at 9:00 p.mv |
