The launch of an Athena H missile, was termed suc-cessiful by personnel at the-base as the missile impacted at White Sands 302 seconds after lift off. Originally .scheduled for launch at 8:15 a.m., a series of delays caused by wind conditions and the need for releasing roadblocks in the White Sands area delayed the lift off until 10 a.m. This was only the second of the Athena H missiles to be launched from the Green River site in a program which began in 1964. The H model of the Athena varies from the standard in ovefrall saze and weight. The standard Athena, including payload weighs approximately 16,000 pounds, is 50 fleet high, and is 31 inches in diameter at the widest part while the newer imiodel weighs, approximately 30,450 pounds, is 60 feet high and 40 inches in diameter at the widest part. The launch Friday, which traveled approximately 420 miles downrange and about 120 miles high, reached nearly 17,000 miles per hour and, carried two pay-loads.
