Show 10 Sun-Advocate, Price, Utah-Thursday, April 5, 1973 Air Force fires two Athena missiles from site GREEN RIVER - Two Air Force Athena missiles were launched successfully March 29 from White Sands Missile Range's launch facility near Green River. The research vehicles, launched at 8:38 and 10:23, impactedas programmed on the national missile range in south central New Mexico. They were the 138th and 139th Athenas to be fired from the U.S. Army's launch complex in southeastern Utah since the program was initiated in early 1964. Data collected during the vehicle's flight is used by the Army, Navy and Air Force as well as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, in studying reentry phenomena of space vehicles. The missiles were launched by an Air Force-industry team with the Army providing safety and data gathering support. In firing the missiles, a one-million acre safety zone west of Socorro in central New Mexico was evacuated. The area was used as an impact zone for the 60-foot Athena's first stage. |
