C, Education- Schools My dear Mr* Commissioner: I have the honor to reply to Office letter dated liar eh 22t 1926., in which reference is made to the cost, attendance, and other items at a possible day school to be established at Allen Canyon, Utah. The distance of the different homes of the children of this district would vary from one to xive miles from the day school during the spring, summer and fall months* During the winter and also the late fall and early spring, most all of these Indians move out of the Allen Canyon district with their sheep, goats and horses for a more favorable range* They scatter over a large area of land, varying from a few miles from the Allen Canyon to forty or fifty miles distant* Therefore, during a considerable period of the school year, it would be impossible to maintain a proper number in attendance at the day school. As a general thingV Allen Canyon and surrounding section has a heavy snowfall and it is principally for this reason that the Indians have to seek a winter range for their stock, Allen Canyon is about 120 miles distant from a railroad over which supplies would have to be shipped to the day school* The freight rates from the railroad point into Allen Canyon would be. about § 2.50 per hundred. A rough estimate of maintaining this school would be as foliov/ sz Salaries and Wages - - - - • - § 2500.00 Material and Supplies - - - - - 1500.00 Repairs and Improvements - '- - - - 25.00 Expenses not otherwise classified - 500.00 Total "'- § 4525.00 This, of course, does not take Into consideration the construction and equipment of a new school building. I believe that the present arrangement of bringing these children to the Ute Mountain School is. more advis- |
