Show ^ ^ r ^ ^ r ^ ^ ? : ^ ^ , Chaotung, Yunnan, CHIHA. Sept 15,'3; • Our dear Children: Today there is a l i t t l e l u l l , after days that have I - "full to burstingy-ftne emergency after the other! On Wed there entered the Seat a BADLY burned l i t t l e boy of five. His parents own a food shop, and somehow the child was badly burned in a kette^ of hot lard. After painstaking care of him for 2 das and 3 nights, he passed on - to where there will be no more suffering. He was his mother's only child. - tho there were 3 children by a, former wife. Her attitude was lovely - SO grateful for the care we had given., and mourning she did n^come e a r l i e r . That pDoa^-dHnde would hardly have mitigated the r e s u l t s , however, I fear. That same daj^ there entered, a 13 yr old, g i r l , i l l 9 das with fever, and body covered with a disappearing rash. Her eyes looked as did AST's when he had measles; and there "was a measles-like • ra.sk. But, i t has proved to be cerebro-spinal meningitis, or, "Spotted Jewer1^ and. I have been a,ble to demonstrate"the meningo-cocci in the spinal fluid.' Today she has rec'd the 3rd inter-spinal dose of antimeningo-coccie serum. Her tempera.ture has steadily fallen, and she i s improved in every way.Th.ank the dear Fa.ther,Above, for these advances in medicine and science. On that same day, we wer^ working over- a l i t t l e 6~yr old g i r l , who had been operated upon the preceding day for " stone-in-the-bladder" - one,l£ by 1, by near § inches, and covered with nodules* She had suffered cruelly. Tho a, g i r l , her father and grand-mother were very tender with her. The 2nd day she developed "central vomiting", and i t kept up,growing worse as the day wore on, end she died before the next morning, of meningitis - with classical symptoms. ,wHD£ she developed that complication, I am not able to explain. Just think! After MSL the e y s t o - l i t h i a s i s cases we have done - at Pang Chuang, Tehchow, and Wilting*- or helped do; or were more or less responsible for in t h e i r care, to have this happen to a, "case" which i s rather rare h.ere - it was a blow. I tried SO HA.iD to comfort the parent and grati.dpa.rent, and their a t t i t u d e was most praise-worthy - t i l l i t came to disposal of the "remains" ; - a man was hired - a beggar - to take i t outside the city, to throw away - M not shocking .anyone, for i t is common custom, especially with g i r l s ! Then, the people were poop.; s, coffin eld i l l y be afforded; land on which* to bury, d i t t o ; custom says she was no0narried and had no sons to mourn her; and, as a big Mohammedan- Xtian said, when his daughter-in-law died, childless, in Tehchow, "She is only a " l i t t l e one*, with no sons to mourn her*, therefore there will be no mourning at the grave, etc."!I The burned l i t t l e boy was given a coffin, and taken home for burial. There was more money in that familyjAHD , he was a BOY! We have another l i t t l e boy, also badly burned - abt 6 yrs old. /mother boy, of 15, tied him to a tree, and lighted a f i r e under him, and kx the back of his legs, and some of chest and back are burned. The perpetrator of the crime ran. away* The "father" - the child proves to be an adopted one - is SO kind to him, and seems to be a good man, tho woefully ignorant in ail l i n e s. How we are ready to skin-graft, and the supposed-to-be father says ha will not give his skin; that i t is not his son; that wre must wait for the cujfcprit to be found who must furnish the akinlf Meanwhile, we are trying to build up the child, who has contracted Malaria - now, happily over i t ; treating him & a l l cases according to the Report of the Lea.Piue of Hations* Commission on ftaTaria, who issued their (3rd) report, abt a year age - all such treatments proving VJiltiY successful, including our Oh1 i Shih-fuf (The l a t t e r , and the l i t t l e boy, both, sleep under nets •£:'wt furnishing the one for the boy; U01TE of the people, unless well-to-do, sleep under net si The ami1 of Malaria is appalling). To add to this week1a "specials", the "coolie" of-this house was bitten on the hand l^r a r a t , some time ago. He didri11 mention the matter, or report to the Hospital. How, he seems to be suffering from " r a t - b i t e f evejr" , and , while hunting in the microscope to demonstrate the spirillum, that caused the fever, and not finding i t as hit" (fira1^freppri|ed] temperature was corning - 'down a few das'.ago,, with an aottroatimi xo'rT^y, nave again taken " smears" ~o<: |
