Road h ere turns to right and runs 3 NEAR THE RIVER. 2 PAWNEE VILLAGE, south of river. Road lies over the bottom land, running in sight of river, to 25 SHELL CREEK. 23 LOUPE FORI{ of Platte rivcr.The road to the Fork is most of the distance near to the Platte, and good camping places may be found at convenient jntervals. 'I' he river here is deep, and must be ferried. There is a fording place one mile above, but it is not safe. 24 THE ROAD RUNS NEAR THE l06j LOUPE. Cttmping places tnay be found on the river, by turning from the road. Elk, Antelope, and Buffalo, will now be often seen. The road here turns to the loft, through the Bluffs, and leaves the river a short distance ; but returning, runs jn sight of TO CALIFORNIA. 11 106~ the Fork, g r adually parting from it . 25 ROAD 'rURNS through S andy Bluffs. To this point good camping places may be found vv ithout difficulty. R oad very sandy and heavy upon teams. Five miles to 5 GOOD LEVEL ROAD. F ifteen miles further you roach 15 PRAIRIE CREEl{. Tho upper ford is much tho best \Vater, \vhioh is two feet deep. Good water and plen ty of grass, but no timber. 1 CREEl{. W a.ter one foot deep, and half a milo further another ! CREEK, f rom which you travel ten mile·s, t o the 10 FORD OF WOOD RIVER, whoro it is one rod wido, and easily forded in ordinary stages of water. Grass good. Some timber on the river. Tho road is excellent, ar1d runs ncar tho Platte river for tvventy-one mil es, to 21 PRAIRIE DOG TOWN AND S \V Al\tlP, on south of road. 184 |
