Secretary; Reference is made to your letter of l? ay 18 requesting action by the Department to eliminate certain lands from the Xa Sal National Porost. Reports- have been received from the local National Forest officers which show that for nearly soventy years the two tarits of Piute Indians have been occupying and using the land along Hammond, Cottonwood, Allen, and Dry 77ash Canyons. Ehoy have bean producing crops in Indian fashion and approximately eight- sections of National Forest land are now used " by them to graze their .. livestock. Since they 3mve been established there for so many years, cuoin oontontod to remain and acquiring title might contribute to thoir bottorment, the elimination of the areas for Indian allotment is approved. |
