Show Z 3 \ l/ l<*3 THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY 84112 April 8, 197^ MIDDLE EAST CENTER TELEPHONE: AREA CODE 801 5 2 0 BUILDING 413 581-6181 Doctor Wendell Phillips Hawaii My dear Wendell: Last night 1 saw you in a dream. You seemed to have lost weight but gained enormous funds. M l indicates how much you are la my mind, though we do not seem to write much or follow each other's news. 3o I plucked xxp %y courage and decided to writ© at some length. Since you have even more courage than I, it is hoped that you will reciprocate at greater length. riy last year was quite fruitful. In travels, Lola and I reached India where I am publishing for the first time a monumental text. I managed to finish vols f & VI in approximately 900 pages id-th notes and commentary. On -:y return I have resumed teaching and thesis supervision. As a rule I graduate a couple of PH.D.a par annua. You nay wonder how they 'ceep me teaching in spite of my age. But three members of a faculty of more than 1000 hold the title of Distinguished Professors of whom I am one and these have tenure for life. As you see, I can just go on providing there are sufficient funds to pay me. This brings me to a sensitive point which I cannot conceal from you. -Our Center has suffered tremendously from the budget cuts by the Nixon administration which does not seem to favour higher education in America. The mn in Persian Studies are approaching the Shah of Iran with some orospect of securing funds for that discipline, Arabic Studies on the other nmd are largely depleted and, until their situation is completely normalised vita the U.S., it seems rather difficult to approach the Shaykhs of .Araby at this juncture. leanwhile it has occurred to me to pat a suggestion before you. Would you be interested in the creation of a "Wendell Phillips Chair of Arabic Studies"? I daresay this will not only Immortalize your name in this area, but it will also |^ing you closer to your old Arabian friends and may even help to open new fields of exploration oefore you. If you are willing to susidize such a Chair, I can start, promoting a very worthy project while I am around. I am under the impression that t. .is will ee a minor item in Wendell's budget now running into the billions while glorifying your name for ever. I trust that you will give some serious thinking to this idea on the part of one of your oldest and most admiring friends. At any rate, I look forward to hearing from you irrespective of your feelings about this grand thought of mine. Lola joins me in sending you our affectionate Season's greetings and very kindest remembrances. fta always, |
