Show the continuation of the art and crafts of the previous generation. 12 In 1937, the state of Utah made a concerted effort to diminish Ute Water rights on their reservation. 13 The extension service report for 1938 includes a map which shows locations of a map of projects on the reservation and the location of canals that supported the agricultural system, as well as discusses of the importance of water to the entire evolving economic base. 14 The map included in the report also shows the exact locations of the Utes' rural reservation community. Extension service representatives in the 1930s praised the Utes' advances in the sedentary pursuits of agriculture, and at the same time school reports emphasized that the Utes remained a migratory people. School reports say that the Ute land and the nature of the people themselves favored nomadic livestock raising more than agriculture. Ute children frequently moved with theirx families, and hence, attended school sporadically. In 1936, Principal Roy Adams also described the Bear Dance and the Sun Dance ceremonies that he observed. Adams did not tell the location of the ceremonies. 15 Forestry and Grazing reports written between 1936 and 1939 12 CCF Uintah and Ouray 6691- 1936, 031, 1935; CCF Uintah and Ouray 4612- 1937, 031, 1936; CCF Uintah and Ouray 13467- 1938, 031, 1937; CCF Uintah and Ouray 1410- 1939, 031, 1938. 13 CCF Uintah and Ouray 13965- 1938, 021.5, 1937. 14 " CCF Uintah and Ouray 1410- 1939, 031, 1938. 15 CCF Uintah and Ouray 78306- 1936, 032, 1936. 10 |
