Show clearly show the federally designated uses of reservation land. A series of maps note the division of the reservation between Ute and non- Indian grazing areas, as well as, the ranges that were already seriously damaged by grazing. A 1937 map also shows the relationship of grazing areas to irrigation canals. Questions asked during the upcoming interview phase of the Uintah Basin Replacement Project might elicit testimony concerning culturally significant features of lands within the Ute grazing areas. 16 The 1939 " Social and Economic Report of the Uinta and Ouray Reservation" is more comprehensive in the scope than any of the others. It provides a historical background of the reservation, a summary of the agricultural and industrial development of the Ute communities, and a discussion of tribal political organization. Detailed statistics describe all of the land and water resources on the reservation. The report also lists the Ute Reservation mineral resources and tells who owned them. The twentieth century economic development of the Utes is documented in statistics concerning livestock ownership, machinery, household goods they own, the capital the Utes own, and the individual assets and liabilities of individual tribe members as well as of the tribe itself. 17 The 1939 report also includes a series of colored maps showing twentieth century land use patterns on the Uintah- Ouray 1937. 17 16 CCF Uintah and Ouray 13041- 1936, 031, 1936; CCF Uintah and Ouray 47912- CCF Uintah and Ouray 36349- 1939, 032, 1939. 11 |
