Description The purpose of this thesis is to record the heritage of the architectural art glass of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, in Utah in an effort to further its preservation... The lack of present scholarship on, as well as the considerable loss of, these windows has prompted me to pursue this study. The History chapter relates European development of stained glass directly to the Saints' experience with the medium. The Analysis chapter deals with the architectural and religious uses of stained glass in Mormon architecture. The first section discusses the physical values of stained glass found in material and architectural function; the second looks at intellectual, emotional and spiritual purposes for the existence of the art •. Pictorial illustration, symbolism􁪽-whether based on motifs, representation or corporeal light--and iconography are studied as they affect the religious use of Mormon stained glass. The process of registration as a means of preserving stained glass is supported and described in the final chapter. The Architectural Art Glass Registry, a series of sheets recording data on the specific in situ windows of thirty-one Mormon sites in Utah, accompanied in the Appendix by colored slides, composes the foundation of the thesis.
