Show )_? is/iz. A Bird's-eye Vjgw of the Middle East Library at _he University of Utah Professor Aziz S. Atiya has kindly suggested that during my three days visit as a guest of the University, I look over the collection of some 100,000 books, monographs, journals, microfilms etc. which have been brought together during the past twenty years. Graciously, he has also invited some suggestions as to how some lacunae could be filled in to provide a more comprehensive imafee of the multi-faceted culture of what is now known as the Middle East. Now the term 'Middle East' appears to be a geographical concept while the pftenomnon to be studied is a cultural concept transcending geographical boundaries and based on languagees, scripts and religions For example, the spread of the Judeo- Christian culture Is closely allied with the Latin script. As an almost parallel, the Middle Eatern culture is reflected in all the languages based on the Arabic script and on scripts based on Arabic alphabet. So looked over the Library with this viewpoint and present these brief notes on: a) the stage already achieved, b) the possible expansion immediately possible, OyJ^ c) the possible extent to which I can be of help. • a) Dr. Wu, the Librarian, showed me round the shelves and the card catalogue and patiently answered my many questions. The first aspect of the Library which impressed me is the achievement of Professor Atiya who has strenuously built te_fe_£ up a variegated collection in a relatively short period of time.
