Show There have been nine of our graduates of last year in the Techou academy this falL One of them, Han Shu Ai, came to our school years ago as.a littlebashful stubborn country girl who the teachers said, would not recite unless she felt like it Her father ™*aP°<£ church member who wanted his daughter to have an education and altho the two dollars which were required for a semester of study, were very hard to get he usually had them. B e nh died and the mother begged us to help the girl which we did until she learned^t dof such nice r r n r l i p + - n „ t h a t f o r several vears she has earned the money necessary for the schoot tees sne F j ^ V r r i t e ^ ^ ^ n and did faithful work She helped in t h j £ * ^ ^ p a £ ment last spring and earned enough for her fees at Techou for one semester and^ha> since done enough crocheting there to help her thru the next term. She « planning to go into the hospital at Techou in the fall to learn to be a nurse and we are sure she will make a kind will ine worker Liu Kuei Ying is another graduate of last year who thru her own determination is|et?mg an education, sle came into the day school and then into the boardmgschoo , with thehelo of a friend because she was such a promising child. Her mother ha, never been anxious to have her stud v and has done much to hinder, but Kuei Ying has never given up-and now is having her reward in that her family are helping her to study in Techou. Shmmay ccme back to teach next fall but expects to keep on studying as long as she can Wang Jui Yun, (Ray Yew-in), has a father who, it is easy to see, thinks a great deal if this daughter and who is most anxious for her to grow up into a useful woman. He said ^ ^ ^ J ^ ™ ] quired so manv times about when she could be taken into our school and th- answer alway* was not room/and when she finally did find a place she was fourteen years> old -wh jchseems rather old to be starting to school in the first grade! But she was as anxious as her father tor an education and has forked at crocheting and cleaning school rooms to help eanmhe mone,/ until she finished last June. She is being helped to go on to school with the idea that some day she will be an evangelist in our hospital. Sun Hui Chen belongs to a f a m i l y ^ th three girls, one of whom finished here three years ago went to academy a year, and now i in the Techou hospital training to be a bourse expecting later to come and work in our hospital The thhd g i r l X our fifth'grade while Hui Chen is in Techou. The ^ - ^ ^ Y ^ ^ ^ j D t i n e one in this family and with help from America has managed to keep the girls in school .During famine year the family were so in want that the old grandfather himself came in to work at carrying dirt with others who were receiving famine relief. The girls are all faithful and indubious but because they are not so skillful with their hands have not earned as much for crocheting as some of the otfcfeis have, so t i e gifts of a friend at home have been very welcome We are so proud to have the girls studying and preparing to help in the future for we do so need teachers, ard evangelists, and other workers and the women are always the most needy. The evangelism of China must'be done by the Chinese and if we can now tram the leader it mean, that the growth of the church is assured. We see so any places where, w<.could use the girls a, d sometin es wish they would grow up faster, but they are really growing up faster with the new system of education and new courses and it will not be so long before our work ameng the women will begin to show result. The building which we enlarged last summer has made a very nice dormitory to hold about sixteen girl? and a teacher, which has helped us to take care of s « * ^ b ^ f ^ s ' ^ teachers, and two cooks. Next semester we are panning to use or a dormitory a budding wh^ch has been sometimes impressed into service as a class room: with so many little children * is hal d to take care of them properly but we find tha putting a number of them ^ l a r ^ r o om together with a teacher to look after them, physically and mora y, helps give them the care they need. It has kept Miss McGwigan, our new nurse busy looking after their head , a.id body infections and one of the teachers has been a great help during he times b e t ^ n th nurse s visits. With our new both-room we have been able to give the little c ^ r e n l w o t e t h M W M^ with soap and supervision, and there has been much less infection than before. Our foi£ higher grades are together in the main ^ f ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ r ^ ^ o fTeach need of the addition to the building so that the grades can ve separate!, m teacher. Our classes are much larger than they were and it is hard to make room f^ them We are hoping that the money for this east wing will be coming soon: we can t a ^ n such a smU part of the girls who should be in school but we would like to be able to have room fora huna red at least for the more girls we have in school the p a t e r the influence of the c ^ r c h ™ be. Please remember our work and needs in your thots an 1 prayers which mean so much to us here at work Sincerely yours, Ethel M. Long |
