It includes an overview of how the present computerization of PSIA is handled and also outlines a proposed computerization program for the years 1973-76. It should be given close consideration from all aspects including cost savings, efficiency and effectiveness. , e"" •• '~~~·<'·~--·'~--·-----·------""--~ PSIA now maintains a to",!9-1'-'Of 12,000 records wi tlr.:tbe following distribution: ~ ~ "- 7,233 members 1,400 registered 1,000 radio, T.V., and newspapers 250 distributors 750 coaches 585 ski areas / 782 ski schQols / 12,000 total record ',--- -----,.- The information maintained--rnCTudes slmtlaafa--as education, major in college, hobbies, birthdate, and occupation, social security number, and etc. At present these records are maintained through a method known as batch processing. The process involves manual keypunching of changes, additions and deletions. A proficient keypunch operator can punch approximately 120 characters per minute with the average speed ranging for 100-110 without errors. Following the keypunching process the punched cards are accumulated until such time as enough cards can be processed through the verifier. The minimum is usually 50 cards. This process simply verifies character positions and does not check accuracy. Following this there is another accumulation of cards so that the reading of the card information onto the magnetic computer tape is more economical. Included in r.his step is the transferring of the data onto magnetic tape and making it ready for computer processing. The information is then fed into the computer via magnetic tape and is manipulated according to the programmed commands which have been pre-written for the comptuer by a computer programmer. The information is then fed out of the computer in various forms and a new magnetic tape is constructed to reflect the changes, additions or deletions. The potential problem areas are: Keypunching: Errors made by the keypunch operator are not discovered until a list printout is run from the computer. Card Accumulation: There exists in this phase a possibility of lost or misplaced cards. PAGE 2 Processing time: Due to the size of the PSIA file (over 3,250,000 characters) the scheduling of time on the computer is very difficult and may involve 1 - 2 days waiting time. Programming: Programming is presently done in a computer language known as Binary. This renders programming by the office staff impossible and requires close supervision of computer programming. Cost: Keypunching: .09 File in: .10 File out: .06 Programming: $10.00 per hour ____ ----.-fil.e- manipulat:iEHH----.N"LA-.--.. _, _____ _ 1972-73 Total Actual Cost for File Maintenance: $ 2,985.00. FUTure: This process can be very limiting when large files are maintained and manipulated on a regular basis. Proposed Method: Phase I, 1973-74 Purpose: To increase the communication capabilities of PSIA and its divisions as well as reduce per member processing costs and maintain the 12,000 records more accurately and economically. There are many computers available throughout the city of Denver which offer a service known as computer time sharing. The system involves a termianl which resembles a teletype located at a predesignated location, in this case the PSIA office. The terminal is connected to the computer via the standard telephone line and transmits data through a series of tones and electronic signals. The computer receives the information transmitted and then answers with the appropriate response. For example, assume that data for Joe Smith was requested. The following procedure would be followed: Terminal Operator: Dial phone number to computer and place hand set on transmit housing. Computer Response: 8:20 a.m., November 3, 1973 User # Terminal Operator: 123456 Computer Response: Password Terminal Operator: PSIA/ATM Computer Response: Reading Terminal Operator: File 80206003 List ------._ .. _._._ .. _-" PAGE 3 Computer Response: Listing 80206003 100 200 300 400 500 600 Plus Joe Smith 2582 East West Way Anywhere, USA Certified 1969 Married, Age 28 Member '73, PNSIA Any other information on file. The computer would then wait for a command and respond accordingly. Problem areas: Experience with this type of system is very limited on the part of PSIA, however, discussions with similar type users of time sharing indicate only minor problems such as familiar-ization of personnal, and noise. . Cost: User Number: $ 1. 00 per month \ Terminal Rental: 65.00 per month - maybe as low as $6.00 Connect time: 4.00 per hour Processing time: .01 per second/ Programming: \ .00 / Terminal Operator: \ .00 - Present personne;t: .... __ ¥.- . ____ -~----•.• ~ .... ~ _ •• __ •.. __ ~_~_. ___ . ___ ._.... . ." -" I «::~timated -=-OS~1!_~~=~~~~= __ 2;~OO~ :?co":: + APO< k-v .. Advantages: ~, Errors made can be corrected immediately before going into computer. Instantaneous update of files Instant access to information on file Phase II, 1974-75 The University of Denver, the NSPS and the UoS. Army Cold Weather Command presently have large data banks of information pertaining to Bio-mechanics injuries, physiology and human performance. This information could eventually become available to PSIA and it's divisions. The information which is applicable could be used by the BiD-mechanics, Certification, and Technical Committee when plans and programs are projected. To facilitate the analysis of this information Phase I of the proposal would prove invaluable. Information could be maintained and periodically distributed to divisions and committees for use. PAGE 4 Problem Areas: Unkown at present, however, there is a chance that the information is irrelevant. Before conversions are made and expenses incurred the data will be reviewed. Cost: At the present time there are no cost figures available due to the recency of the program and itTs organization. It is anticipated that initial conversion charges will be incurred; the amount will depend on the type, size, and format of the information available. Advantages: The elimination of duplication presently existent within the divisions and committees. The opportunity to base technical decisions on varying sources of scientific data. Phase III, 1975-76 The Phase I program should be expanded into the larger divisions of PSIA. The availability of centralized computer facilities would greatly increase the information available to the=givjs;nns Qf PSIA as well ap enable all divislons to realize direct benefit from c: national efforts-;- t ~v eP"1V Problem Areas: Finalization of division personnel Expense for divisions Cost: The costs would be initially equal to PSIA, however, should decrease substantially after the first year due to the increased effectiveness of each division. Advantages: Increased communication capabilities. Increased cooperation between divisions. Rapid advancement of ski teaching technology. , '() (' I ", 'j1 I C') , ; ;, ' .... J ..
