Southern Ute and J i c a r i U a Agency, Ignacio, La Plata Co., Colorado* S i r : I have received your l e t t e r of April 16,1889, stating t h a t you have been informed by Ignacio,Mariano,and other Headmen of the Wimenuche band of Southern Utes,that there are a number of Ute Indians under the leadership of Ben-ar living in the Blue Mountains, in Utah, (southeast corner) adjoining the Southern Ute reservation,and claimod by Ignacio to belong to the Wimenuche band of Southern Utes,although not on the Agency r o l l s (nor those of any other Agency); t h a t from the s t a t e ments of the headmen ma.de to you in council with them,you are s a t i s f i e d that the Indians r e f e r r e d to are a band of wild Indians that have never been brought under the influences of c i v i l i z a t i o n ; that they Imve the appearance of extreme pove r t y , look h a l f - s t a r v e d , are nearly naked,and are subsisting upon rations Issued to the Southern Utes. They wish to give up t h e i r wild l i f e , s e t t l e upon the Southern Ute Reservation |
