Show and share in the benefits of that tribe,and the Southern Ute Chiefs referred to admit that they are entitled to do so and are willing they should. You express the opinion that something should be done for these Indians,and Chief Ignacio having suggested that you go with him to the Blue Mountains and count them and look into their condition, you ask for instructions as to what steps you shall take in the premises. In reply, I have to state that under date of July 28,1887, your predecessor, Agent Stollsteimer,reported that on the day previous he had called upon the commanding officer at Fort Lewis,Colorado,for assistance in compelling the return to the reservation of some of his Indians then roaming In the Blue Mountains. He stated that there were.but a few of the Southern Utes there,but that a large number of Pah-Utes were roaming about there to the annoyance of s e t t l o r s and stock men. Upon the recommendation of this office troops were sent to ibhe Blue Mountains,and the commanding officer at Fort Lewis reported to Headquarters Department of the Missouri,under date of August 8,1887,as follows: T i J; ^ n t a company of Infantry to Blue Mountains,Utah, July 20, (1887), x x x.
