Barriers to industrial development in Utah's portion of the four corners region

Utah's portion of the Four Corners area is composed of the 21 counties which are south and/or east of Salt Lake County. The Utah Four Corners area covers 65,000 square miles which is approximately 80 percent of the state. The are a has a population of 274,500 dispersed throughout the region in a very uneven pattern. The Four Corners region was established as an administrative unit to solve the problems related to improving the economic and social conditions. However, the problems of the region are not uniformly distributed throughout and even the established subregions do not have a high degree of homogeneity. Data concerning the Utah Four Corners area are dominated by Utah County which contains approximately 50 percent of the population, 49 percent of the non agricultural employment and 75 percent of total manufacturing employment. Due to this fact data related to Utah Four Corners area can be greatly affected by changes in Utah County which may not be representative of the region as a whole.
