In May, because of the acute shortage of doctors, both foreign and Chinese, Dr. Cooke was called to help out in the American Board Hospital in Fenchow, Shansi, for a month. The cost of living has increased at least four times over prewar costs and the Japanese occupation has meant many more taxes than formerly. We have been unable to raise salaries sufficiently to cover their expenses, but with the Board's help we are giving bonuses which help, not however, entirely relieving their distress. We hope that your contributions to the relief of the acute suffering and starvation in Europe will not be less, but that you will remember also our continued needs. Mrs. Kuan, the Bible woman is very faithful in her service to the women of the wards, listening to their troubles, discussing their problems with them teaching them to read and write (if they are willing to learn), singing Christian songs and reading the Bible with them.
