The white stripe at the top of the flag symbolizes the white of the snow capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The Red stripe in the middle symbolizes the red of the mountains in the Colorado plateau in the south east of Utah. The bottom strip represents the great salt lake and its prominence in the basin and range region as well as the lake's importance in the history and settlement of Utah. The symbol positioned 2/3 of the way to the left of the flag represents Utah's position about 2/3 of the way in the western United States. The three hexagons of the symbol represent the beehive state and the importance of the beehive symbol in the Latter Day Saints faith. The number of hexagons once again calls out to the three regions of Utah as well as the colors and the three stripes. The layout of the hexagons in a triangle pointing upward and their slightly vertical elongation is a callout to the Latter Day Saints temple in Salt Lake City. Finally the red and yellow together in the center of the flag as well as the general layout of the flag is a call out to the Spanish flag and the early Spanish exploration of the state.
