| Description | Jules Destrée received a degree in law from the Free University of Brussels. He became a member of the Belgian Labor Party in the early 1890s, joining the socialist movement. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1893, after defending the Workers Union and supporting universal suffrage. He held this position until his death. After Germany invaded Belgium in 1914, Destrée went into exile in France at the request of the Belgian government. From there he traveled to London and Rome, pleading the cause for Belgium. |
