Show Nicosia, Cyprus. December 28, 1950 Dr. Aziz S. Atiya Care Library of Congress Washington, 25 D.C., U.S.A. Dear Dr. Atiya: This note is to tell you that a few days ago I wrote to my friends of the National Geographic Society of Washington about my contact wiibh you in Cairo, about your impending visit to Washington and about your willingness to offer forst choice to The National Geographic, through me^Wour report on "the find of m century," in the deciphering by you of 'the Codex Arabicus. I asked that the magazine give its reactions to me at my home~"in Massachusetts as soon as convenient, and I expect that I shall hear from the editors by the time I get home, about January 20, 1951. I wrote them as careful a brief statement as I could of what you told me that night at Shannon Allen's apartment in Cairo. I may mention that a letter received by me from my wife today tells of her having read in The Christian Science Monitor about your early, expected visit to Washington and about your work on the Codex. I judge from my wift'Nl words that this was merely a short reportorial mention of you, and the importance of the palimpsest. My home is Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts (that address is sufficient) and when you have gotten settled in Washington I should be pleased if you would kindly send a few words to me at that address. If your reply comes before my own return my wife will save the letter for me - or send me a copJsomewhere in Europe just prior to my coming. I recall with very special pleasure my brief "encounter" with so interesting a personage as yourself, through Allen, and I hope I may have the pleasure of seeing you in the not-distant future iii Washington. With all best wishes for the New Year so soon to begin, I am Cordially yours, Sydney A. Clark P.S. It is rather amusing that I am to arrive by air in Tel-Aviv on the evening of December 311 I seem to have picked, for that momentous^ hour, the one country where our Christian New Year's Day (and &ve) would count for little or nothing:^ |
