Description The study of negative Mu's stopped in matter permits the deduction o£ several properties of not only the interaction, hut of the nucleus itself. When a negative MU stops in matter, it rapidly falls to a K-orbit of a radius comparable to the nuclear radius. Since the MU is a weakly interacting particle, its nuclear interaction probability is comparable to its decay probability, and the two possible processes compete to make the mean-life of the negative MU smaller than that of the positive r decay probability of the MU is also altered due to K-orbit binding. The accurate measurement of both the decay and the absorption (i.e., interaction) probability is made in the present experiment, and permits comparison with theory.
