Show 2Sf.S/l^ 18th May, 1950 Professor Aziz S# Atiya, 15 Sharia Mariette Pasha. OaircySgypt. Dear friend, I must first apologize for deferring this letter so long. As I explained to Wendell in my tardy letter to him, I had to go to bed completely worn out after my arrival in Baltimore the morning of the 1st of May. However, having a great deal to do, I rose the next day and divided the following week between bed and work, with the natural result that I am still very much below par. There was so much to do at the University on my return, with several Ph.D. candidates waiting nervously for my return, and such heavy correspondence, that I have only just been able to keep my head above v/ater. However, I am definitely improving. The arrangements made with the authorities in wairo, with the Egyptian Embassy in Washington, and with the Library of Congress, worked very well. The only hitch was that the box containing the 418,0C0 jsagesof microfilm had to be sent from New York to Washington in bond -- and they were forwarded by railway express instead of by air, as promised. However, they reached Washington on the 5th and the box was picked up at the Washington custom house and carried to the Librsry of Congress, where it was opened and found absolutely intact. The Library of Congress people are very happy over the whole business, and very grateful to all concerned. I delivered your letter to Dr. Evans, and have had a satisfactory correspondence with Mr. Verner Clapp since then. He sent me a copy of his letter to you on the 15th, and I have replied to him. I think you will be pleased with the arrangements being proposed. I am writing directly to Hitti and others, with regard to possible lectures next autumn. I was delighted to find a copy of your book, The Crusade in the Later Kiddle Ages, in my mail soon after my arrival, and I have already read It with great interest. It is very interestingly:written and full of meat. I shall not fail to call it to the attention of all interested colleagues. My wife and I hope to have you and Mrae. Atiya in our home for one or more week-ends this summer. Two of my sons receive their baccalaureates from Catholic institutions in Washington this June - . one from Georgetown University! (Jesuit), and the other from the Catholic University of America; I hope they can both meet you later this summer. With my most cordial good wishes and renewed thanks for your hospitality on such pleasant occasions this past winter and spring, I am, Very sincerely yours, |
