Title Links between Latinx families and schools
Date 2025
Description This study examines how Latinx families engage with U.S. schools due to the role of being involved in a community-based organization (CBO), Utah Community Advocate Network (UCAN), to support their engagement and advocacy with schools. Through semi-structured interviews, this work centers the voices of four Latinx mothers who are actively involved with the UCAN. Findings reveal that UCAN fosters Latinx family engagement by empowering families, addressing systemic barriers, and fostering community connections. Findings also reveal Latinx families' suggestions for educators to strengthen relationships with them, including effective communication, bilingual accessibility, and demonstrating genuine care. The paper concludes with recommendations for UCAN, educators, and teacher education programs to prioritize relationship-building, bilingual communication, relationality, and culturally responsive practices.
