Show <P r /<r9^ THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY 08540 Telephone-609-924-4400 THE DIRECTOR November 1978 Dear Friend: In 1955, the Institute published a bibliography which listed the publications of its permanent and visiting members during the first 25 years of its existence. Robert Oppenheimer in his introduction referred to this bibliography as a "literal record of the Institute's primary work." In the 1977-78 Director's Letter, I mentioned the possibility of publishing an Alumni Directory as part of the Institute's Fiftieth Anniversary observance in 1980. We are now making plans for such a publication which will incorporate the material from the earlier directory and also contain biographical as well as bibliographical information for the first 50 years. In addition to separate entries for all alumni, the directory will have several appendices showing current geographical distribution, institutions of origin, and other indices useful to those who are interested in the life of the Institute. In this connection, I would be most grateful if you would return to us the enclosed questionnaire at your earliest convenience. Some of the answers to questions are already on file here, thanks to the information you have given us previously, but in the interest of accuracy, uniformity, and completeness, I am asking you to give us a somewhat more detailed account of your career. As the book takes shape it may be necessary to edit some of your responses. Another aspect of our observance of the 50th anniversary will be the creation of a permanent collection of members' publications related to their residence at the Institute. We therefore would like to ask that you send us copies of the publications you list in item 11 of the questionnaire for inclusion in this archive. The Alumni Directory will be available to members in 1980 at a special price to cover actual costs. We believe it will be a useful and interesting document of some historic importance. Your cooperation is of vital assistance to us in this enterprise and I look forward to your prompt response. Sincerely yours, Ql AM Harry Woo^Lf pS |
