Show UNIVERSITY OF UTAH UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES Memorandum to Brigham D. Madsen from W. David Laird Date June 12, 1972 Following is the sequence we have agreed on for the processing of the Levey Collection. 1. The Cataloging Department (specifically Karolyn Pederson and any others who may need to have familiarity with the Collection). We'll begin rearranging it on its present shelves into rough subject and language categories. In particular the Arabic language materials will be brought together and such broad subject categories as medicine, math, physics, technology, chemistry, and others which may suggest themselves during the reorganization will be grouped together (I note that there will probably a section on general history of science and also, probably, a miscellaneous section containing such things as encyclopedias and periodical backruns). 2. Dr. Atiya will refine this broad subject arrangement in such a way as to make the most effective presentation of the Collection to photographers, reporters, and University administrative officials. 3. In the meantime, you will contact Elizabeth Haglund to lay the ground work for the publicity at the appropriate time. 4. When Dr. Atiya has completed arranging the Collection Elizabeth Haglund will be asked to set up the publicity including invitations to the appropriate University officials. Since we cannot possibly have all of this completed in time for an early summer release we are aiming to have all the pictures taken, stories written, in time to meet Elizabeth's deadline for the first issue of the University Review in the fall. 5. As soon as all the publicity is taken care of the Library staff will begin processing the Collection. A. We will arrange through Tom Schmid to assign a crew to do the bibliographic checking. B. The Cataloging Department will begin processing of the non-duplicate material. C. Duplicates will be segregated and Dr. Atiya, Marian Sheets, Karolyn Pederson, and other faculty members with subject expertise (e.g. Harold Bauman and Gail Dick) will be asked |
