They recognise their proximity to the most valuable markets in the.world and they are the only nation to have defeated communism from within. I am proud to make my own contribution on an economic level. I am particularly pleased to have personally taken on the responsibility for the education and training of the Indonesians who will be working with me in the concession. I am also pleased to have the responsibility for the prevention of pollution and the protection of fishing and navigation rights to the area". Dr. Phillips stated that the contract area was previously relinquished by Shell for political reasons. Between 1956 and 1959 three shallow test wells were drilled. These gave encouraging signs of oil. Dr. Phillips said, "The seismic data we have in our possession indicates excellent possibilities". Dr. Phillips is unique in the world of international oil in that he operates as an individual and not as a company. He has, however, set up a managing office in Djakarta. "So far, I have been inundated with offers of technical assistance", he said, "many of them from British companies. I believe that the climate for the development of business opportunities in Indonesia is outstanding at this time". Dr. Phillips, who is also Professor of Archaeology at Wyoming University, had previously personally adopted one hundred children in the area of the contract. "These are primitive stone age people", he said. "it will be my responsibility to keep an eye on them and make sure that they get a proper schooling and a good start in life". In ./. |
