Show Scott S. McKendrick Logan, Utah born: 7 August, 1951 Scott McKendrick, the oldest of three children, was born and raised in Tooele, a mining and ranching center located 30 miles southwest of Salt Lake City near the southern tip of the Great Salt Lake. His father was a calf roper, so there were always plenty of horses around his childhood home, and many of Scott's early memories are of hours spent on horseback with friends, exploring nearby mountains and canyons. As a young man, Scott's primary interest became riding pleasure horses and preparing them for competition. He became skilled at breaking, training, and shoeing horses, and was rewarded for his hard work by winning three state championships in pleasure horse training. His interest in horses took him to Utah's agricultural school in Logan (Utah State University) for his degrees. There he became involved in the horse program under J'Wayne "Mac" McArthur and eventually worked with him as an instructor. Scott assisted in the gathering of information for Mac's study on the impact of the horse industry in Utah's economy and eventually wrote up their findings for his master's thesis. Although Scott had always been able to think up words that rhymed, he had never tried writing anything down until Mac inspired him by giving it a try. For Scott, "emotion brings out writing" and he describes his poems as being somewhat sentimental as they "reminisce on the good times or tell stories about past experiences."
