Show OLD HORSE Old horse your days are numbered, your race is almost run. But I wouldn't sell or trade you because of what you've done. But just what I'm to do with you has surely got me treed... I'm scared someday they'll 'round you up to go for chicken feed. You that was once so toppy, so pretty, so proud, so grand; Are termed a public nuisance now by those who run our land. Away with useless horses... it almost makes me weep. Away with useless horses... make room for a few more sheep! You crippled yourself in the ankle running the last wolf from this range. And now there's no room for you, Buck. Ye Gods but some folks are strange. We've seen many tough times together. And though you were not always fit You carried me through the tight places and never was known to quit. Up trails that were wantonly winding- down slides ungodly steep- Through quicksand or snow (if I wanted to go) or rivers wide and deep. You crippled yourself in the ankle, for we took some pretty hard spills, Running around precariously over these rough old hills. 46 Cowboy Poetry From Utah |
