Atiya 14 Sharia Wadi el-Nil Maadi Cairo, Egypt Dear Dr. Atiya: This is a delayed answer to your letter of December 19th. It was such a pleasure to have it and to recall again the many heartwarming hours I have spent with you and your wife. Right now I am looking at the two lovely pieces of Coptic embroidery which you gave me. They are framed in my office and are always an item of interest to my American friends. I am sorry that thus far nothing has come of the California situation. On my return home I found a letter from the Dean saying that the matter was still under consideration, and from this I gathered that the whole question of a Middle East department is still in abeyance* A few weeks ago I was asked by the University of Michigan to suggest someone in Eastern History, and I have taken the liberty of putting your name forward. • whether anything will come of this, I cannot say. I am well settled in my new work, and find it extremely interesting. It is probable that next Winter I shall make a trip to the Near East, and so refresh myself with one more drought of water of the Nile. Please give my warmest most cordial greetings to your wife, in which my wife joins. JSB/ib John 5, Bao.eau President SUPPORTED ENTIRELY BY VOLUNTARY GIFTS AND LEGACIES |
