Drennan Coen Company, Inc. 1510 Rollins Road Burlingame, CA 94010 (650) 697-0440 phone (650) 579-3255 fax ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to describe several applications where advanced combustion technology has been used to utilize industrial waste as an energy source in environmentally responsible manners for industry. Applications for both gaseous, liquid, and solid wastes with varying calorific value are discussed. The ramifications of environmental regulations on such combustion strategies remains paramount in the system design. An application of off-gas atomized heavy oil generated in an ethylene production process for firing into a boiler is described. An application is also presented where C F D is used as a design aid for low N O x sander dust firing above a bark fired grate in a boiler. The combustion of such wastes provides a low cost solution for industry for disposal with the added benefits of reducing energy costs by firing in boilers, heaters, kilns, etc. The modifications required to allow the environmentally sensitive treatment of these wastes includes retrofitting conventional combustion equipment and complete burner system redesign. The use of computational fluid dynamics and chemical kinetics codes to evaluate destruction and removal efficiencies is also discussed. The paper also details basic research required to assist the combustion engineer in the development of such equipment. The result of such applications is a reduction in product manufacturing cost while maintaining adherence to strict environmental regulations. |
