CO « A> J It appears that there is but very little trouble"""' in connection with the liquor business among these Indians at this time. The saloons that were formerly adjacent to some of the Indian settlements have been closed and apparently with-very satisfactory results. living as these Indians do, I take it that in most respects they would be under the jurisdiction of the local authorities in any kind of disturbing the peace or other misdeaeanor, but I could not learn that there was any considerable difficulty. I did note that Su.pt. Zneale had arranged for a district school to be opened in his guard house, which would indicate it was not much needed as a penal institution. V Post of the .carriages are by Indian custom, though a considerable percentage now are getting licenses and are married in the regular way. The agency occupies the old military post, which it appears is still under the jurisdiction of the 'Jar Department. Thepe. are really more buildings than are absolutely necessary for agency use and more than it is practicable to keep in a good state of repair. I would urgently y recommend that this post, with the 150 acres of ground reserved, be turned over to the Interior Department, in order that we may have greater freedom in handling and |
