In this work we address the problem of tolerance representation and analysis across the domains of industrial inspection using sensed data, CAD design, and manufacturing. Instead of using geometric primitives in CAD models to define and represent tolerances, we propose the use of stronger methods t...
We present the development, fabrication and testing results of a new high-density flexible sensor array (HDFA) suitable of recording three-axis stresses with high spatial resolution. The new HDFA consists of 676 (26×26) sensing cells fabricated on top of a high-density flex circuit substrate. Each ...
Electron microscopy(EM) facilitates analysis of the form, distribution, and functional status of key organelle systems in various pathological processes, including those associated with neurodegenerative disease.Such EM data often provide important new in sights into the underlying disease mechanisms....
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of scripting languages as a mechanism for controlling and developing scientific software. Scripting languages allow scientific applications to be encapsulated in an interpreted environment similar to that found in commercial scientific...
Malek and Daar [M&D] argue that parents have a duty to employ prenatal genetic diagnosis (PGD) if they undergo IVF knowing they are at risk of transmitting a serious genetic condition. Although M&D limit their analysis to parents already undergoing PGD, in which they say the parental obligation is s...

The generation of functional novelty in proteins encoded by a gene superfamily is seldom well documented. In this report, we define the A-conotoxin superfamily, which is widely expressed in venoms of the predatory cone snails (Conus), and show how gene products that diverge considerably in stru...
Sklar and colleagues2 describe their experience managing "over-shunting headaches" with an abdominal binder. Seventy children with over-shunting headaches complied with application of a binder for about 1 month. In 61 patients (87%), the headaches "greatly improved or went away." This headache relie...
There is considerable evidence of functional abnormalities of the cortico-basal ganglia circuitry in affective disorders. However, it has been unknown whether this represented primary pathology within these circuits or altered activation as a result of aberrant input from other brain regions. The ai...
While isotopes are frequently used as tracers in investigations of disease physiology (i.e., 14C labeled glucose), few studies have examined the impact that disease, and disease-related alterations in metabolism, may have on stable isotope ratios at natural abundance levels. The isotopic composition...
The motion of the Earth around the Sun causes an annual change in the mag-nitude and direction of the arrival velocity of dark matter particles on Earth, in a way analogous to aberration of stellar light. In directional detectors, aberration of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) modulates ...
The inability to make a definitive diagnosis in the fetus with a sonographically identified abnormality often results in parental and physician uncertainty. An antenatal chromosome evaluation could resolve this uncertainty. Forty-one fetuses with an abnormal ultrasound examination were tested for ka...
Despite multiple advances in medical imaging, noninvasive monitoring of therapeutic efficacy for malignant gliomas remains problematic. An underutilized observation is that malignancy induces characteristic abnormalities of vessel shape. These characteristic shape abnormalities affect both capillari...

DRAM accesses are costly, especially in multicore systems. Future CMPs will run a mixed load of workloads/threads. Destructive interference at memory controller, spatio-temporal locality lost! DRAM row-buffer hits are least expensive, row-conflicts are most. Randomized memory access patterns re...
A purely cohomological proof is given for the absence of the (1,0) supersymmetry anomaly in gauge theories on a world sheet. In particular, it is shown that generalized cohomological approaches to anomalies in supersymmetric gauge theory, either formulated in whole superconnection space or only in t...

Mice with targeted disruptions in Hox genes have been generated to evaluate the role of the Hox complex in determining the mammalian body plan. This complex of 38 genes encodes transcription factors that specify regional information along the embryonic axes. Early in vertebrate evolution an ancestra...
The large magnetic-field-dependent ac absorption in superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3Oy ceramics and powders decreases slowly with increasing frequency in the range 2-16 MHz. The magnetic-field-dependent ac absorption is observed below Tc in superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3Oy ceramics, powders and twinned crystals ...

We present photoexcitation studies of vacuum deposited neutral films of α,ω-substituted sexithiophene (α-6T) using photoinduced absorption (PA) and PAdetected magnetic resonance spectroscopy (PADMR). We find evidence for photoinduced polarons having spin 1/2, with two absorption bands at 0.80...
Photoexcitations in poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy -p-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) and composites of MEH-PPV and C60 (MEH-PPV/C60) were studied by photoinduced absorption and absorptiondetected magnetic-resonance spectroscopies. We report direct evidence that the prominent triplet photoexci...
We present a semantic theory that allows us to discuss the semantics of indeterminate operators in a dataflow network. The assumption is made that the language in which the indeterminate operators are written has a construct that allows for the testing of availability of data on input lines. We then...
A denotational semantics is given for a lazy functional language with monotonic side-effects arising from the unification of singly-bound logical variables. The semantics is based on a Scott-style information system, which elegantly captures the notion of "constraint additin" inherent in unificati...
Power converters constructed from discrete components are difficult to mass produce, and the installation involves a significant labor cost to have the proper interconnection among the panel, inverter and the grid. These facts indicate that the present PV technology may not be able to address the ch...

Academic podcasting:quality content delivery 2009-09-23Our weekly department seminar has been available as streaming video for several years. Streaming video depends on a reliable, broadband connection for the entire duration of viewing for consistent video quality. Even users with faster internet connections have reported poor video quality at times. A new system for distributing the seminar was developed that takes advantage of content syndication technology. Podcasting is a form of web syndication whereby multimedia content is made available for use by other applications. Streaming video depends on a reliable, broadband connection for the entire duration of viewing for consistent video quality. Even users with faster internet connections have reported poor video quality at times. A new system for distributing the seminar was developed that takes advan-tage of content syndication technology. Podcasting is a form of web syndi-cation whereby multimedia content is made available for use by other appli-cations. By making the seminar available as a podcast, some of the problems related to streaming video broadcasts are resolved. In addition to be available as a live webcast, department seminars are recorded in AVI format, converted to Real Media streams, MP4 video and MP3 audio formats, and stored on the Eccles Health Science Library multimedia server. We developed a database-driven web application to input and store seminar metadata and automatically generate files that conform to Really Simple Syndication (RSS) 2.0 (http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss), an XML schema that defines machine-readable descriptions and links to media in a web feed. These RSS files also contain specific tags that allow the feeds to be published in the iTunes Music Store Podcast Directory. End users can subscribe to video and audio feeds through web-based podcast listeners or desktop-based feed aggregators that support file enclosures. The podcast is indexed in several podcast directories including Apple Computer's (Cupertino, CA) iTunes Music Store Podcast Directory. iTunes is unique in that it combines a web-based podcast directory with the desktop-based feed reader. Discussion Podcasting is quickly gaining popularity. Podcasts can be transferred to por-table media devices allowing for viewing away from the computer. By making the seminar available in this format, viewers experience an improved viewing experience at a convenient time and place. Only a small fraction of existing podcast would be considered academic. The University of Utah Bio-medical Informatics Seminar is one of only two podcasts listed in the iTunes index on the topic of Medical or Biomedical Informatics. This seminar is an approved source of CME for live viewing, either in person or remotely. This presents the possibility of the podcast also becoming an online source for CME credit.
