Show THE FOLLOWING IS AN INTERVIEW WITH JUDGE J. ALLAN CROCKETT ON JUNE 18, 1977. THE SUBJECT IS JUDGE HERBERT M. SCHILLER AND THE INTERVIEWER IS HYNDA RUDD. HR: Judge Crockett, how did you first meet? Do you recollect how you first met Judge Schiller? AC: Yes, I do remember, because it was what I regard as rather dramatic. I had heard his name as a practicing lawyer. In the summer of 1931, shortly after I had been admitted to the bar, I had a matter on in the Third District Court here in Salt Lake City. I went there and here was this man, who was Herbert M. Schiller, later to become Judge Schiller. A very striking-looking man, dark hair, dark eyes, neat and trim appearance. He expressed himself so well before the court, and I admired that. After the session was over we went out into the hallway and walked toward town and conversed with each other, and he spoke to me as though I had been an old friend. I do not suppose the legal aspects of what he was presenting to the court would be particularly pertinent now, but that was my meeting with him. Somehow I just felt like here was a very intelligent, personable individual that I had a kinship or friendship with from then on. HR: Were you peers? Were you both at the same level of experience and education at that point? AC: No, he was much advanced beyond me at that time. I am not sure how long he had been a member of the bar, but it was |
