The ori ginal plans of this t emple were published i n the nMillennial Star , '' XVI , 635 , and in t l1e nDeseret Ne vv sn , August 17 , 1854 , by the a rc h itect , Truman 0 . Angell . The whole l e n gth of the building , including towers , is 186! feet , and the widt h 99 . There a re six towers, three on the···ea.st and three on the west end of the structure . The four corner towers each start from a footing 26 feet s qua re , and dontinue 16i feet. At this point they reach the line of the base string course , and are here reduced t o 25 feet s qua re . At the height of 38 feet they reach the second string course , and are reduced to 23 feet square . 1Then they con tinue 38 feet to the third string course . The string courses continue all around the . building , exce pt when separa ted ~y buttresses , and consist of massive mouldings from solid block stone . The two corner towers on the east end then rise 25 feet to a connice a nd the two west towers 1 9 feet . The four towers t h en rise 9 feet to the to p of the battlements . They are cylindrical , 17 feet in diameter inside . Each of these . tor.Ners have five ornamental windows. The t wo centre towers st art from a footing 31 feet s quare , and A . bre a k o f f i n sections in line with the corner towers to the ~ height of t he thir d string course . The e a st tower then ris e s 40 feet t o the top of the ba ttle ments and the west to ver 34 feet . All the towers termina te in spires , the det a ils of which we r e not decided upon when the orig i nal plans were drawn. At t he co r ners of the towers are oct agoti turrents . On the t wo west corner towers and ·on the west e nd a re seen i n alto reli eve the fi gure of Ursa Major, with 't he point ers ranging nearly towa r d s the polar star . The walls of t he build ing are from 6 to 8 feet thick , stan ding upon a f ooting of a 16 feet t h ic k a nd 16 feet deep wall . The basement is divided into several apartments . The cen ter room is 5? feet by 35 , and contains the baptismal font, In the f irst storey is a large room, 120 feet by 8 0 . It is a r ched over in the ce nter with an eli ptical arch , which drops a t its flank 10 feet a nd has 38 ,feet span . The l arge room in the second story is one foot wi der than the room below, i n COfi§ e qu ence of the walls being but six feet thick here , falling off lix inches on the outside and six on the inside. In both storys there are nume ro us side rooms . The roof is a l most flat . The whole building covers an area of 21, 880. :feet .
