Show -24- Luis Valley. Sunday , December 1, 1877, was a very beautiful day and the temperature moderate and pleasant. After adjusting themselves in their new quarters , and making preparation for their meals, etc , they assembled in the early afternoon in their first religious service in Colorado. Curiosity had brought quite a number of strangers from the city to visit the new camp; many of whom remained to listen to the church services. Elder Morgan preached a sermon on the necessity of union, order , and cleanliness in the camp. He emphasized the truth that: only where cleanliness is, can Godliness be found. The congregation was deeply impressed and many of the visitors remained to make further inquiry concerning the tene nts of the LDS Church. Monday, December 2nd, the west-end kitchen and dining room was erected, a stove moved in, and a fire started. Scarcely had this been done than the winter turned uncomfortably cold, but the people were comfortabl ~ in their new adobe. The day was spent indmors. The various families fixed their respective quarters in order that all might be more comfortable in their new winter quarters. The next day was terrible. The wind was biting cold and blew a hurricane. The air was full of dust causing some sickness in the group. Elder Morgan administered to those who were ill and in the evening had the people assemble again in a church ser vice. In talking to the people, he explained to them that it would now be 1necessary for him to leave and return to his home in Salt Lake City but encouraged them in their pioneering effort and counseled them to adhere to the Gospel and its truths to which |
