THE SERENADE LAST NIGHT Last night , a t a some11vhat late hour, Captain Croxall's brass band serenaded ex Secretary Seward and party a t the Townsend House. The evening was clear and beauti f ul, and a l ar ge c on c ours e of people, nw-nbe r i ng f r om f i ve t o ei ght hundred, a ssembled in anticipation of a speech f rom Mr. Seward . After the pl ay i ng of "Hail Columbian: and the nAllandale Quickstep rr by the band, Mr. se-ward app eared, in response to calls fr om t h ~ crowd, and being introduc ed by Alderman Richards , said: "Fellow Citi z ens , it would be i mpossib l e for me to speak so as to be heard by so large an audience as t his; and were it ot herwise proper, the circumstances under which I am t raveling thr ough the co untry f orbid me f rom engaging in any kind of discussion of public or political affairs. ..' Th ey do no t f orbid me, h owever, a cknowl edging t he hos pitality and ki ndness whic h have been s h own me by my fellow citi zens. Tha t is all I can do, and I do it with a free, kind and good heart. I thank you for the h ospitality you have shown me since I came to your c i ty.
