It had been announ Jed definitely that an exhibition would take place last night, and shortly after dark persons began to assemble from all parts of the city to behold the wonderful light . Half past 8 o ' cloc k was the hour set f or the lighting , and by that time the sidewalk in the vicinity of Walker Brothers' st ore was almost jammed with an expectant throng . The Walker House had a l i ght in front , ·wal' er Brothers had one also, as well as Mr . Lipman i n fr ont of his clothing store . This made three li ghts on the street wi t hin a radius of ha l f a block . Precisely at the hour stated for the c ommence ment of the exhibition a faint blue spark was seen to appear simultane ous l y in these three out - door globes, and in a few seconds t hey had develo ped into the most beautiful and . bright est of lights, illmninat ing ~ uite a l ar ge radius on the streets and side-wal ks . At the same i n stan t~ al~o t hough they could not be seen from the outside, thirty - seven other lights in the Walker House , Walker Bros . store, the . rhi te Hous e, in Joslin & Park ' s jewelry store, in some saloons and a number of clothing places were started up ; and a murmur of a dmirat i on ran through the wondering crowd as the dazzling light poure d upon them . The light is brilliant almost beyond description, and in the main was free from the flickering and the alternating increasing and lessening brightness which characterized the exhibiti on some months ago insi de and in front of the Co - op s tor e . The lamps in f r ont of alker Brothers ' store and Li pman 's clothing establishment were lli'1Steady, and that at Walker -Brothers nearly went out . This, how ever , is reported as due to the f adt that in t he great rush which has attended the hanging of the lamps and the running of wires, the carbons were not properly adjusted , and in the case cited it touc hed the rod . This statement is sustained by the evident proof to be seen in the lamp in f ront of the Walker House, which burned with marked steadiness; and by t h ose in the stores , saloons and halls . The light was better inside t han out . In the s tores it was remarkably brilliant, illuminating every corner, and maki ng all thi ngs wi t hin a reasonable radius as cl early de f ined as in daylight , 1f not more s o• I n t he store of |
