| Abstract |
Kelen conducted a series of interviews with Michael Arnovitz (b. 1896) in November and December 1982. Arnovitz's wife, Rose Leibowitz Arnovitz, is present for the interviews, and her comments are included in the transcript (as indicated by the initials "RA"). Topics covered include Michael's childhood in Keyesport, Pennsylvania; his parents' life in Austria; the World War I era flu epidemic; jobs held in Pennsylvania, Idaho, and Utah; discrimination by the Irish; religious beliefs; keeping a kosher home; prohibition; pawn shops, and Jewish businesses in Salt Lake City during the 1920s and 1930s. Arnovitz also recalls Salt Lake City in the 1920s; seeing Al Jolson perform; the Depression of the 1930s; the stock market, business and morale; his perception of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, including comments on the fireside chats and the New Deal; Zionist support during World War II; the National Council of Jewish Women; tensions between Montefiore and B'nai Israel; a book called Up From Seltzer; the bar mitzvahs of his sons; and his memories of Rabbi Cardin. 173 pages. |

I loaned money to my older brother, Joe, and during the depression he had a tough time. I - I couldn't get themoney from him. He didn't have it. So, after - after I got started, then he finally paid off what he owed me, plus the interest. But had I been able to get the money at that time, when I got married, I would have been better off, because Icouldhave bought stocks andbonds at that time for a song and - and made some money. But he was broke. he didn't have any money. LK Did you get some advice from Jim White at that time, about what to buy? Did he giveyou any help that way. MA No, but I've always fooled around with the ~ock market. He did give me - Jim White did give me one stock that I still have. It was the Royal Dutch. LK Royal Dutch. MA Royal Dutch Petroleum. I paid 36 dollars for that stock. It was split several times. And I bought a hundred shares. For Thirty-six dollars. Now, they've split the stock and I've got a 1,000 shares. It's worth about $34 a share. LK ANdyou've got a thousand shares. That's handsome. That's handsome. MA That'sbeen over a lot of years. That's during the - when the depression yers. I've had this stock for alot of years. |
