This interview was conducted by Joyce Kelen. Samuel's wife, Jackie, was present and her comments are included in the transcript (as indicated by the initial "W"). Bernstein (b. 1909) recalls the Congregation Shaary Tzedick and his father's household. He also talks about Kaplan, who acted as kosher butcher, mohel, and cantor in Salt Lake City. He recalls his duties as the first president of Congregation Kol Ami, talks about the consolidation process, and remembers Rabbi Bergman. 15 pages. |

Well. it wasn't so muc h tha t as it wa s that the whole thing would continue and exist. J How did youfeel when a llo f a sudden it stopped existing. {{hat do you remember a bo ut that? I was a l ittle older then. W Probably couldn't have cared less. I didn't -- I guess it didn't bother me too much. Because I remember hearing stories from some of the Jewish fellows who were perhaps a little older than I and they went to the Hebrew school at Montefoire. And they told a story [he laughs why they didn't get along with the Melamed .- and they would lock him in the coal shed. W Were there any Gusses involved. ~0. J So it sounded like Moneefoire was having more fun so you couldn;t wait to get over there-- Well, they were older than some of them thati'm talking about .. Certainly older than myself and so I would/R~Se been able to have grown with them. But you know, I And parties in fue s ynagogue today and watch these bar mitzvah services. that they have, you know, afterwards. I remember wheni was bar mitzvah, my folks would have a little party after services. And that was it. And I'd be given presents consisting of maybe a tallus, a ring, fountain pen. J so when Sh. Tz. finally ended, how did that decision come about. Was there a m meeting and people got t ogether and decided ... I just don't recall the mechanics. W You were not involved like you were when the new temple started here. J Thebuilding still exists now, right? So what is it used for now? Well, it was sold to the --one of the veteran's organizations. And I guess it's still up. W The bldg. is still there. J So when it was sold, did they give the money then to Montefoire. Oh, sure. Or maybe they gave ------------------- W Some one kept the money for the cemetery . The Cemetery Fund. They had their own cemetery. In fact it's still there. J Now, is thatwhere your parents are, intat cemetery? No, my parents were buried in the Montefoire Cemetery. But her parents are buried in the Sh. Tz.
