Show 13 Smith, Sam Smith that took dad under their wing and got him started. LK: \fuo were the Smiths? YI: Smiths were neighbors. I don't know how Dad got acquainted with them. That I couldn't tell you, they're all dead and gone now. But we were neighbors. All I know is that they . . in fact, Sam Smith and Jim Smith was really close to Dad and to myself as a boy growing up. They jus~ started farming, got a team of horses, and I can't tell you how they got the horses. They rented ground, via cash rent or sharecropping. That's how they generally got started. We used to farm where the Taylorsville High School is now. I remember going there with Dad when I was five or six, before I started school, and cultivating beets. LK: Is that what you farmed out there? YI: Yea, mostly it was beets. That was a cash crop. They had hay for the horses, and grain, oats, things to feed the horses, then the cash was the sugarbeets. We went down there, I remember Dad raising some watermelons. I moved to Union in the sqme period, so I would be about five or six years old. |
