GO Yes, she also brings sewing box, mirrored dresser, the tall mirror that sits low on the floor. The bride'·s parents provide these things. 2 OU The bride brings everything . • • everything needed to set up housekeeping. Dirmer ware, flower arranging equipnent, decoations . • • everything is put into the naga-mcchi. She brings everything. SF What' s the purpose of dowry? OU That's before the wedding. During the fonnal announcement, the groc:m' s family brings gifts, such as bolts of material, money, etc. It is expected of proper groom's family to do this, but in many cases they don't. The brid~'s parents pro-vide most of the things. In a large family where there are three girls, it is said that the family will be bankrupt by the time the three girls are married off. UO Wanen blacken their teeth after the wedding, white teeth, still single. I remember my grandmother and mother blacken their teeth. By the time I left it was no longer done. I don • t know when the practice was abandoned, but both of them had white teeth when I left. It :'Was the custan in those days to dye one's hair, but my folks did not. They had it fixed "nihon gami", Japanese style. In the village where I was bam, there was a hair dresser and my folks went there regularly ·to have their hair styled up to the time when I left. I don't recall any warren in my area dying their hair. My grandmother had her hair cut short. SF When she came to the U. S. she became one of the member of the Kariya family. |
