Show A COFFEEHOUSE LIKE IT USED TO BE Pars Restaurant & Acoustic Music Present Saturday Evening Concerts at 10:00 Here's some really exciting news: A real "oldstyle" coffeehouse to go to on Saturday nights! With the. tr~mendous increases in the popularity of the Unitanan Church Coffeehouse in the last few months it s~~s that the time has come for someone to attempt a Siffillar format on a regular, commercial basis. Pars Restaurant, 239 South 500 East, which features ~ddle-ea~tem cuisine as its regular menu, transforms Into a 60s style coffeehouse on Saturday nights at 10:~0 P·.m: (a~ter the dinner crowd has eaten.) Featunng distmguished local performers and occasional .out-of-~own "national" acts such as Kenny and Tzipora this month, Pars is a performance oriented venue as opposed to the type of restaurant/club background music to which we've all become inured. The ambience is right out of the past (candles on the tables, espresso, coffee, tea, soft drinks, desserts and snacks on the menu, the performers are expected to entertain, and the audience??? Well, let's just say that there are a lot of places to go and eat a pizza, have a beer and make a ~ot of noise and ignore the musician. But, for t~e aficianado, for the lover of quiet, sensitive divertissement, for the fan who likes both active and passive participation, this is the place for you. For those of you who remember The Fisherman and The Corkroom with fondness, Pars is a welcome return to a tr:adition of acoustic performances every weekend, which Salt Lake has sorely missed in the last eight years. With the exception of the Unitarian Church Coffeehouse, there has not been an establishment that caters to the listener and to that most critical of components, the atmosphere .... Granted, the hours are late, but the hope is that people will see it as an "after hours," "post-movie," "apres-other stuff' activity, a good way to fin.is~ off a Saturday night. Expect a modest cover or minimum, but also expect quality food and a good time. On Saturday, April 1st, Pars welcomes Rex Loker in a warm evening of folk/string music. Rex, an architect by profession, is also a veteran Salt Lake folkie and one of the founders of the now-thirteenyears- running Unitarian Church Coffeehouse. Look for Julie Haas to join him on the mandolin. No foolin! 7 April 1 Rex Loker & Friends April 8 Yankee Clipper April15 The Ryt1un Fish April 22 Kenny &Tzipora April 29 Moon Riders On April 8th, Yankee Clipper sails in to the stage with great songs of the sea and features the wonderful vocal and instrumental abilities of Cliff Butter and Mark Jardine .. These ~uys get pretty rowdy and display a pretty amazing musical presence on stage, and off, as rumor might have it! · . On April 15th, the Rythm Fish (gee, did I spell that nght? Ed.) bring an eclectic mix of folk, calypso/reggae and vocal harmonies, with congas, guitars and sweet vocals to Pars. Come enjoy a Falafel Plate and a cappucino for this one. Saturday, April 22, Pars welcomes Kicking Mule Records Artists Kenny and Tzipora in concert. K&T are a New York City folk duo with a wealth of music and magic. Blending the musical styles of Britain, Eastern Europe and America, they play original and traditional songs. Especially interesting about these two is the defi- . n~te influ~nce ~f the Gypsies. Tzipora sings, plays flute, ~Iccolo, tln whistles and guitar. Kenny also sings, plays fiddle, mandola and guitar. On the 29th, Moon Riders with Steve Wesson Nancy Shaw and Kerry Collison bring blue grassy har~ monies, some humor and a fun trio sound. Pars is a concert-like atmosphere, with a good sound system and the room is surprisingly quiet. A great place to wind up the night. The cappucino is frothy and the tea is good too! . So, don't head home after your Saturday evening S~)lree; com~ hear some. great music in a place that is putting a prem1um on the listener's environment! |
