Some of you have been asking, "What is the UCGS?" I hope this month's column will help to answer some of those questions. The UCGS could perhaps best described as the Fingerstyle Division of lAMA. Unlike many other puritanistic classical guitar associations across the country, the UCGS tries to keep its doors open as wide as possible. It might better be called the "Utah Fingerstyle Instrumental Guitar Music Society," but that would require all sorts of legal , record changes, and UFIGMS (euphigms? , you fig 'ems?) would make an awkward , acronym at best. Steel string players are equal to nylon string players, in our eyes. Our opening concert (another shameless plug?) underscores this fact. The overriding emphasis is on fingerstyle instrumental styles, intended as complete performance pieces in and of themselves, as opposed to vocal accompaniments. Serious, quasi-contrapuntal arrangements of Beatles tunes are no different in concept than serious, quasi-contrapuntal arrangements of Bach chorales. John Fahey, John Renbourn, John Williams, and John Dowland deserve (and, we hope, receive) equal respect and recognition from our members. We have no real objection to singersongwriters or flatpickers per se; many UCGS supporters excel in these genres. It's just that we can't be everything to everyone. That is lAMA's job, as the local umbrella organization. DATE TIME EVENT NAME 10/16/93 8:00pm David Norton & Dylan Schorer"' 11/16/93 7:00pm Student Recital 03/12/94 8:00pm Scott Tennant* At a recent meeting of the UCGS' s Board of Directors, we determined that the UCGS serves four distinct groups of guitarists and aficionados: Level I Beginning Students (of all ages) Level II Intermediate and Advanced students Level III Utah-based Performers and Teachers Level IV Out-of-State Performers and Teachers To serve these separate-yet-related sectors, we have set up a Schedule of Events for the 1993-94 Season (see table, below Additionally, there is a Player's Circle held on the first Monday night of each month, at 7:30 p.m. The location is Acoustic Music Studios, 845 E. 400 South, in SLC. Please call Peter Choles at 531-7066 for more information . The Solo Cmpetition in May is intended for students from ages 10 to 25, in Junior and Senior divisions. Rules, prizes, and assorted details will be announced in December. Membership classifications in the UCGS have also been revised. Rather than the flat 10% discount offered in the past, we have established three categories of supporters: ASSOCIATE Donations of $25 to $49 SPONSOR Donations of $50 to $99 PATRON Donations of $100 and higher The names of all Associates, Sponsors, and Patrons will receive recognition on the printed programs distributed at UCGS events. The UCGS is a non-profit organization, so contributions are tax deductible. Please contact me at 943-2262 if you would like to contribute~ or if there are any other questions I can answer.
