Show Folk Dirt continued With the advent of digital recording it is now possible to get that "big sound" in even very small project studios. Recorders like the Alesis ADAT or Tascam's D-88 (both are eight-tracks) offer specs that, when properly operated, rival the very best analog recorders, and for prices that are one-third to onehalf the amount. These are not tape decks in traditional sense, but rather very sophisticated computers that "sample" sounds at 44,100 times per secondror more, and store this sample bitstream as zeros or ones. A wonderful benefit of digital recording of acoustic instruments is an unbelieveable signal to noice ratio. The result is a fatiguefree monitoring ability that actually sounds like it is supposed to. This allows the use of even modest microphones and signal processing. Prior to digital, the quality of microphones was critical to overcome (by comparison) the "noise floor" of all but the very best 2-inch analog tape recorders. The preS.:. ence of all of this technology at affordable prices makes it readily available to artists who wish to self-produce recordings or charge modest amounts of money to record the music of other people. Next month: The down-side of recording anyone, as well as an overview of venues for acoustic musicians in Utah. ~omposted by Jay Toups Musicians! Get your stuff in the calendar!
