Show 10 Medium to long term RID on advanced combined cycles will focus on: New materials: integration of new (high temperature) materials in combined cycles or for hot gas cleaning components. Novel components associated with demonstration or pilot projects, or selected key items that would have a significant impact on plant efficiency and economics. Fuel mixtures: combined combustion or gasification of coal blends and coal with biomass, residues or wastes including hazardous or toxic wastes; investigation of the properties of the solid residues and byproducts. Optimization of processes or process development: advanced process design and development of external, hybrid, topping and other mixed cycles. A significant efficiency increase and/or cost reduction should be achieved when compared the combined cycle which are presently in the demonstration phase. Studies on the integration of fuel cells using syngas from solid fuels in combined cycles. Techno-economic studies to define, for the above types of cycle, the most appropriate design, efficiency, emissions, capital and electricity production costs for further strategic decisions. Techno-economic evaluation of methods for CO2 capture and disposal. D. Means of implementation. Considering the above constraints (financial, political, environmental, cohesion, subsidiarity), the strategic requests, and after having consulted a large number of European industries involved in advanced coal fired power generation, it was concluded that the European Union can only make a difference through Synergy Programmes and multinational and multidiscipliIWy collaboration. The principle of subsidiarity will be applied rigorously: the projects will concentrate on key technologies or subjects that cannot be done alone by one country (sharing of costs, time, efforts, etc.) the projects must be of common interest for all parties involved (no subsidizing of a specific industry, no support of a given region, no sectorial projects) and have generic targets A cluster of larger focused projects will build a basis for a large integrated European network of excellence combining industry (small, medium and large enterprises), research centres and universities with complementary expertise, know-how and approaches. Each proj ect will have a common aim to which all partners will deliver. All results are available for all partners (results may not be hidden or locked away) and will form the basis for subsequent projects (results must be applied). |
