Smith , Salt Lake, Utah My dear Sir:- Logan, Utah, Sept. 10, 1906 I take this means of calling your attention to the fact that I shall again be a candidate before the approaching Republican State Convention for the Nomination as Representative in Congress. I believe that by virtue of the experience I have already ·obtained and the acquaintances I have made among the leading men of the Nation, I am in a much better position to serve our State than when I was first elected to this office. I feel that I can say this without egotism. Those who occupy leading positions in the National House of Representatives - the Chairmen of the important Committees-are veterans in service, and have obtained their advanced standing by reason of their long experience in Congress. It is not the custom there, any more than elsewhere, to pass on to new members the highest positions of responsibility and influence. A great many of the States have now come to recognize the value of keeping in Congress men who have had training therein because of the good results which are seen to follow; these same States enjoy a greater prestige and an increased influence over those which are forever sending new delegations. I point to Wyoming as a conspicuous example among the western States of the benefit of such a policy; her great influence is freely commented on by public men everywhere. I therefore ask you to kindly consider my candidacy in this light and in the light of my past services, which I hope have been satisfactory; and if it appeals to you as I trust it will, that you will do all you can ~onsistently to promote it among Republicans. Hoping that my candidacy may find favor in your sight and that it may deserve and benefit by your earnest efforts, I have the honor to be, Very truly yours, d~J6~ 1 |
