Show n May 11, I960 Dr. Bayard Dodge 19 Alexander Street Princeton, New Jersey My Dear President Dodge: I was delighted to see you again, however briefly, last Saturday at the Middle East Institute Conference in Washington. Unfortunately, 1 did not know then about the matter, which is the subject of the present letter, and with respect to 'which you may vish to extend to me sotae help; had I known aoout it then, 1 would have discussed it with you orally, y&ur time permitting, instead of resorting, as I must now do, to the mail. I have been having some discussions with Stanford University with a view to my joining the faculty of the Department of Political Science and oficring some courses on the Middle East. I am now informed that the Department of Political Science has formally decided to appoint me as Associate Professor. Under this arrar;gement, thich will take effect in September, 1 shall offer some courses in Arabic Philosophy and some-courses in current Middle Eastern affairs. All requirements of the Department seem now to have been met, and the Chairman of the Department as well as the Dean are prepared to submit, in the next few days, the routine application to the Advisory Board and the President for my fo r; al appo i > ] tm ent. Eovever, they have asked me to trans dt to them one or two statements, from people in a position to kn;v, re..ardigg my "teaching ability." I have located Dr. Cragg, who was Acting Cnairoan of the Department of Philosophy at A.U.B. urine the two years in which I taught Philosophy at A.U.B., and I have cabled him to Kngland asking that he transmit one of the req ired stateoer.ts. It has occurred to me that you may be kind enough to wish to make a statement on the question of ay teaching ability. I real ire, of coorse, that you may feel that a long time has passed since I last taught at n.U.B. (from October 1945 to June 1947) and that therefore you may have little, if any, recollection of my periormance as a teacrer; I also realire that, as President, you may not have been, even then, sufficiently fauiliar with tie teaching aoility of a junior memoer of the faculty. If, for either or both of th«se reasons, yoo feel unable to help me out, I shall of course unoerscand fully |
